being formal…

after one whole week of labour, i finally manage to finish lil j’s trousers.  actually, i spent most of the time de-constructing this…

this was a pair of my pants which i haven't worn for a while, ermm.. since i quit my job some years ago actually...

and then i drafted the pattern from this

traced the patterns from an existing pair of shorts that best fit

by the end of the week…

all done... that is after some hours of cutting, sewing, pressing etc...

upon washing and ironing...

and then there was a wedding to go to…

the little boy all dressed up. i made the pants a little too roomy for his liking, and unfortunately i did not get a chance to let him try before hand, so there was no time to work on it further. the shirt was hand-me-down from a friend whose boy's have outgrown it.. which was perfect for lil j.

it was a lovely wedding indeed.  lil j kissed the beautiful bride a couple of times too 🙂

if only we remembered and managed to take at least one family picture yesterday… oh well, there is always next time 😉

another wardrobe refashion attempt

i found this maternity dress which i’ve never worn before just the other day.

believe me, i heard this fabric calling out to me when i was spring-cleaning the storage...

i knew just what i had to do…

i turned the dress into a slim-fit, non elasticised, slightly-pleated-front pair of shorts for my lil j! and not wanting to "waste" the fabric, i made the pockets extra long and big.

alright, it did not turn out right on the first attempt.  i totally forgot that by wanting it flat waisted, it means i need some opening of sort otherwise, how could you possibly wear it?  so i had to cut the front and insert a fly zipper.  it certainly did not end up too shabby.. i guess…

and then i had more of the fabric left.  i decided to make lil j a matching cap..

lil j's new cap, fully lined.

here’s one of my favorite pictures of him “parading” this outfit in Eumundi Market when we were holidaying a couple of weeks ago…

he was all smile when invited to sit and take a photo with these mates.. in fact, he was watching them strumming away happily, and even put some money after that. lil j is a big fan of street musicians indeed.

oh, did i mention i made both the shorts and cap just the night before we went for our holiday?  i simply had to! 🙂

refashioned: linen pants/trousers

spring cleaning.

and i found a pair of my favourite pants which unfortunately, have shrunk in size.. (ermm.. or was it me who has put on those extra pounds??)

one of my favourite linen pants

and made it into this:

i used the original pockets as i want to have big pockets for lil j. instead of making a cuffed hem with the strap, i sew the strap vertically (for no apparent reason).

using the original buttons, i made two loops on the top back of the pants. the strap at the hem can either be buttoned from the front or back

i am glad that the pants fit perfectly now 😀

pants from “remember when” fabric

i mentioned in my last post that i made 2 pairs of pants for lil j last week.  (well, actually, since the first pair is a reversible pants, i technically made 3 pairs for him!)   the second (or third) pair was made from the same fabric of one which i’ve made for him sometime ago here.

i really love that fabric and since i have more left, i decided to make another one – with new pattern (yes, i am experimenting with patterns to come up with something i can sell).  more so, the first pair was not done well – i made it a little too small and as it is, it appeared too low-waisted (and unfortunately, showing too much of his bulky diaper 😛 )

it’s flat fronted, but i added tab to enable flexibility, and also to make sure lil j didn’t outgrown it too soon.  oh, i also added pockets (i used knit for this one).  not too shabby me thinks…

oh what joy it is to be out in the park, especially when you are wearing a new pair of pants handmade with care and love eh?

i made this pair extra long and bigger than lil j's current size. the straps allow flexibility, and beside being practical, i think they actually look rather cute too.

on that note, i was thinking, with 5 pieces of clothing (an overalls for Annabelle, another overalls for Caleb, a pillow case dress, and two pair of pants for lil j) completed over the last week, i just need to come out with 2 more to meet the challenge of elsie marley’s kcwc.   oh wait, i just missed the deadlines anyway 😛  despite that, i thought kcwc was a great idea, and it surely inspired me to just get down to sew something!

new pants for my (not-so) lil j

i think lil j must have suddenly grown taller in the last couple of weeks or so… i noticed most of his pants are getting somewhat shorter, and i don’t think they have shrunk (or maybe i was merely looking for an excuse for me to make more pants for him)

regardless, i was rather “productive” last week.  i made him two pairs of new pants!  did i mention how he is always excited and eager when i showed him something new i made for him? (usually first thing when he wakes up from him nap)  and that he would happily and obligingly put them on.  and refused to take them off later.  ahh.. maybe that’s why i keep wanting to make stuff for him 😉

my first attempt at a reversible pants. mainly because the weather is getting colder, uh, and reversible means seams are hidden.

the reversed side of the pants. i thought it looked boring so i added the lil caterpillar on the butt. only because lil j is into the hungry caterpillar now - we read at least 20 times a day!! (he calls it nom-nom) i have never done applique before, and the felted caterpillar was actually handstitched on after having completed the pants. well, he loved it, and has already worn them twice since i finished it last tuesday

more pants.. obviously

yup.  more pants.  because i need more practice, and because lil j loves wearing the stuff i made him.  uh, also because i can’t make him a skirt you know.

i love this fabric! made this somewhat retro looking pants after seeing a picture of a dungaree. the pants is held together with buttons on the side openings. yes, lil j is in love with buttons, and he calls this the button pants.

i made a second pair of the button pants with another oh-so-retro looking fabric. and lil j thought it was a good idea to pair up with the bandana and the elmo slippers.. hmmm...

i just love em retro looking pants, don’t you?

shirt into pants refashioned

i have this shirt in the closet which neither hubz nor me would ever wear.  it was a man’s shirt – mandarin style, given by someone.  not too sure why i kept it either.   anyway, i was looking for some stuff (which i have forgotten what i was really looking for) and i stared at it thinking.. fabric!  i got excited, and quickly set off to make something out of it…

too bad i was so eager to get started i did not take any picture of the shirt before i ripped it apart.  but the result, was pleasing… at least to me.  a new pair of pants for my lil j!

lil j was a happy boy when i put on the pair of 'new' pants for him. i added a turned-up button cuff at the bottom, both to lengthen the pants as well as for ahem.. aesthetic purposes.

to jazz it up a bit, i sew a faux fly front, elasticized back, and cuffs straps with the bottom of pants folded up *i did feel a little like a designer at once stage*

oh, i made him a pair of slippers as well since he was always wearing mine 😛
