a fairy dress for lil k

the name of the dress given by lil j.  i love how creative he is.  and how he sees things and imagine all kind of things.  i love how chatty he is (although some days i feel so tired listening and talking to him)  and i especially love how he enjoys making lil k laugh.

and so when i made this dress for lil k, he told me it looked nice (he is ever so generous with compliments) and that it looked like a fairy dress.  when i put it on lil k, he said she has turned into a fairy with wings.  i liked that, so this dress is now called lil k’s fairy dress.

the tie was originally made to be worn in the front but lil k loves pulling it off, so i reversed it to the back and that was when lil j said they look like fairy wings.

i’ve made this dress a little long with the hope that lil k will wear it for a long time.  i am sure when she’s grown taller, this dress can be turned into a top, matched with leggings or tights.  and perhaps, when she stop pulling the tie, the fairy wings can grow in the front 🙂

Fun in the Farm Series – Custom Order

this dress is one my my first custom-made orders 🙂  and the last panel of the farm themed fabric in my stash.

made two weeks ago for a girl named Sophie, who will be celebrating her birthday in a week’s time.

this dress was sized 4T. it has a little pocket and comes with ruffled hem. i also hand embroidered my label sewn.for.you on it.

the back of the dress. this was as close as possible to what was requested by Sophie's mom. with rickracks trim added for fun factor.

i love how colourful and playful this dress turned out.  and especially since this will be the last piece featuring the farm themed fabric (unless i can find it and re-order).

i hope Sophie will be delighted when she received this in the mail 🙂 thanks, Sharon!

next challenge coming up.  refashioning a formal wear for my lil j for a wedding we are going to attend this weekend.. stay tuned 😉

fun with batiks

my sister got some batiks from Bali from her recent holiday trip there.  she sent them to me and i was tasked to turned them into something wearable. these are the results.

this piece of lovely blue with big pink flower motif was used to make a sleeveless dress/night gown for our niece. i did not use any pattern, just cut the piece as would a peasant dress style.

this one can either be a nightie or a summer beach wear i guess. again, no pattern, just a little of random cutting and turning it into a simple piece of clothing. i used bias tape to finish the bodice and double up as the shoulder strap, which is adjustable. this dress is made for my sister of course.

each dress takes less than one-lil-j-nap hour (read: no more than 2 hours)

and i still have two more pieces of batik to go.. i haven’t quite decided what to do with them for now… maybe a dress for myself.. hmm… we’ll see

What then shall we say?  Is God unjust?  Not at all!  For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”  It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.  Romans 9:14-16

sewing for girls

if lil j was a girl, i’d probably be already making all sort of dresses and fancy outfit for her daily!  but well, he is a boy.  so my attempts at sewing for girls are minimal (and boring).  so far.

made this A-line pinafore after having started sewing for 2 weeks and a little.  it was for my niece, A.  (we are many plane-hours away so it was quite a feat for a then 2 week old sewer)  regardless, i got a pattern from a book for 2T (A was turning 4) so i had to use the best of my imagination (and i guess some common sense) to come out with a simple dress.  it fit.  not particularly well, but it did fit.

my first ever dress. it was a simple pattern, the only challenge was to apply the bias tape - i later came to know that i did it kind of the wrong way, but well, it still turned out pretty decent. and birthday girl was pleased 🙂

then, i wanted to urmm.. practise some more, and also because i would love to make something for A’s elder sister (W) as well, i sew some more girl’s outfit.  a pleated skirt for W, and a set of halter top with a simple skirt (again) for A – making full use of my 1 metre.

the fabric was simply gorgeous, so i just made a real simple pleated skirt for W (8T)

started only with the skirt. but since there was a piece of fabric left after making the other skirt, i just piece the leftover together to make the halter top.

not much real work for these since there were such simple patterns.  but those were my firsts.  hopefully something more sophisticated might come out one day 😛
