a new car seat cover

feeling a little under the weather, so will let pictures do the talking.

repurpose car seat

a long overdue project, i finally put some sunshine-y colour to this car seat. it looks so fun and inviting now, perfect for this winter weather. the lining, although invisible, has lovely printed bible verses on joy, love and faith. and as usual, my lil j never fail to offer himself to “model” for my photographs. how could i say no to him?

hopefully, this nasty cold will go away soon.  there’s still plenty for me to sew!

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Ephesians 6:16

k+j sibling’s matching jackets

i bought this piece of woolen fabric because i wanted to make lil j a jacket.  so i started to google and read all about making a suit/jacket.  then the reading get too tough (there were all sort of jargons and i was too impatient really)… and i decided to purchase a pattern from here.

unfortunately, the pattern was not up to my expectation 😦  i wanted to make a professional looking proper suit but this pattern  doesn’t come with a front facing and back neck facing, just front and back lining.  also, i wanted to bag the jacket lining and eliminate hand sewing but this was not the case with the pattern.  by then, i was slightly distraught but still adamant about wanting things my way!  so i diverted a little (to allow for ahem! more research time) and made a trench coat for lil k instead, with the same fabric of course.

i drafted the pattern from scratch, drawing inspirations from various kids clothing designs but keeping it simple so as not to make too much mistake, and enjoyed my first attempt on woolen fabric.  even added some handmade piping and little pleats for details.

naturally, i made the jacket bigger, hopefully lil k can wear it longer. so i added a martingale so it won't look too baggy.

i did not line this jacket, so i hand sewn the hem and decided that the jacket for lil j HAS TO BE LINED.

and then i started working on lil j’s jacket.  with extensive “research” plus staring countless times at hubz’s suits, I finally put the scissors to the fabric.  along the way, those jargons and online tutorials eventually made sense 😉

lil j's jacket finally completed

yay! lil j’s jacket finally completed

i must say the instructions for the welt pocket from the original pattern i purchased was very clear.  i’ve attempted the welt pocket before but wasn’t very successful so this was a major improvement. the tedious part was cutting the fabric to ensure the pocket pieces pattern matched the jacket shelf.

except for the opening to turn the jacket inside out, the whole lining was completely bagged and machine sewn. i was rather happy with the outcome!

so now, my lil j and lil k have a matching, sibling jackets.  even the buttons are matched!

a fairy dress for lil k

the name of the dress given by lil j.  i love how creative he is.  and how he sees things and imagine all kind of things.  i love how chatty he is (although some days i feel so tired listening and talking to him)  and i especially love how he enjoys making lil k laugh.

and so when i made this dress for lil k, he told me it looked nice (he is ever so generous with compliments) and that it looked like a fairy dress.  when i put it on lil k, he said she has turned into a fairy with wings.  i liked that, so this dress is now called lil k’s fairy dress.

the tie was originally made to be worn in the front but lil k loves pulling it off, so i reversed it to the back and that was when lil j said they look like fairy wings.

i’ve made this dress a little long with the hope that lil k will wear it for a long time.  i am sure when she’s grown taller, this dress can be turned into a top, matched with leggings or tights.  and perhaps, when she stop pulling the tie, the fairy wings can grow in the front 🙂

introducing… lil hedgehog

10 months later, that’s it.  wow!  is she already 10 months old?  where did all the time go?

anyway, for the first time.. making her debut in this blog.  lil hedgehog (a very lovely nickname given by lil j)

lil hedgehog aka lil k at one month old.

and she just keep growing.

My name is cutie - a gift from Oma.

and before i get enough of holding the tiny little her, she was all ready to “get up and go”

i was quite sure she was trying to make the pouty lips look. she was cat-walking on the couch. one of the outfit i sewn for her, which lil j thought it was a fairy dress - he said the tie at the back is the fairy wings. my lil j is such a sweet boy :)

and now at 10 month old – with 4 teeth, loves music, special liking for “twinkle twinkle little star”, very much into Thomas the Tank Engine (thanks to lil j), extremely sociable and happy, tremendously loud (especially when crying – and it can go on for a long time), lover of food – especially gourmet meals, cruising around fast and almost ready to walk, and very tough with quite stubborn character emerging…

a very playful and cheeky girl. but don't mess with her. lil j will tell you she is not easy!

and i have indeed been sewing up a storm for this lil monster!  just don’t grow up so fast please lil k, ok?

and a year later

i went missing second day into the KCWC challenge last year.  succumbed to my PGP, so I slowed down.. and was not quite in the mood to blog.

then i just rested, and enjoyed the company of my parents.  and their cooking.  and my growing belly, and all those in between.

then lil hedgehog made her debut.  easy and fast, but extremely loud.  she is getting louder by the day now.

and we went away, all of us, for a good two months.  for a break, for a holiday.  or maybe not quite.  but we were away.

then we came back, and before we could resume normalcy with a new member in tow, we found our dream home.  so we packed, and packed, and packed, and then we moved.  and then we unpacked, and unpacked some more… you get the drift.

and after a year and a bit later… i am back.

yes, the sewing machine is not in storage anymore, and it has been used a fair bit.

and i will (fingers crossed) be updating on new things sewn… soon.  as soon as i find the strength to upload the photos 😉

and i had to share this which basically describe most of my days now.  (someone emailed to me, sorry i can’t credit the orginal source)

[KCWC] Second Day: Sweetheart PJs

(Pattern from Sewing For Boys by Shelly Figueroa and Karen LePage)

Sewing with patterns do make life easier, eh?  Usually, I draft my own pattern, and that usually means lots of tweaking and trial and error as I have to rely on whatever information or tutorials I can get online.  And most of the time, I don’t fully read information, which means I make lots of errors and (try to) learn from them 😛

Anyway, I tried following the instructions in this book as much as I could this time.  It did help minimise silly errors 🙂  But I had to draft the pants much smaller, using one of lil j’s pants because the pattern in the book was way too big for my skinny boy.

This was my second project for KCWC:

the perfect piece of cotton flannel for a little boy who adores vehicles and things that go! although, admittedly, it is often cheaper to buy kid's clothing off the shelf, no? nevertheless, the satisfaction and joy of making it with much love far outweigh the cost of buying something ready made, i guess...

we (as in lil j and myself) decided to go "train" all the way and use these cute train buttons I got from dollar shop. he hasn't worked out how to button/unbutton his shirt but it is still a nice touch.

the look of happiness in his face! priceless! the blanket on his bed is a WIP, hopefully I can finish it off as my next project.

So much for my second day.  Today, I do hope I can continue working on something – maybe a new pattern, or some cutting or even finishing off a blanket for lil j.  My back is aching rather badly and it is a holiday here, so I am hoping to spend some quality time with hubz and the little noise bucket (who, has been awake since 6am seemingly having a blast in the room – trust me a 2.5 years CAN make enough noise to scare off an elephant!)

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Romans 12:11-12

[KCWC] First Project: Receiving Blanket and Matching Jacket

so i started with first gear, and sewn something relatively easy.  a PINK coloured receiving blanket 🙂  (yes, it is going to be a girl!)  really, not much sewing skills needed – straight line, 4 mitre corners and voila!

my oh-so-soft and oh-so-pink receiving blanket 🙂

and then i decided to make a matching little jacket with the leftover fabric.  after all, i need to start this project with a bang, no? hehe..

a very simple, almost patternless tiny little jacket. finished off with some bias binding, and added some tiny lace as well. now isn't this sweet?

i used the bias tape as the ribbon tie as well. and decided to hand stitch (<3 with lots of and lots of love ❤ )to finish off the bias binding. can you see the little lace along the bias binding? the jacket is so tiny and ultra soft. lil j saw it and said "is that for my sister?" then he added, "it feels so cosy" as he touched it... i just love that boy!

not bad to start off this “challenge” eh?  today, i am thinking of making a jammies for lil j… stay tuned!

But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.  Luke 15:32

sometimes… i kind of forgotten that i have a blog ;)

good enough an excuse for not updating?

well, i haven’t really been sewing much, too, honestly.  too much distractions, too little time to take out the machine, the ironing board, etc to get sewing started.

BUT, i will definitely be sewing this week!  everyday of the week!  because i have signed up to sew along elsie marley’s KCWC!  woot! woot!

meanwhile, these are some things that i have sewn lately.

"inspired" by my lil j's house building with blocks and lego, i made this door stopper one morning. he said, mama, can you make another one but make it into a pillow? hmm... i haven't got around to do that for him yet... soon, soon...

i love this fabric, so i made it into a fold-able shopping bag.

as usual, my lil j wanted to be my model. he is such a charmer, every time i made some thing, he volunteers to be my model and willingly poses for the camera. oh, of course, i cut his hair too 😉

i made this nursing cover with a hooter hider for myself! since we will be travelling a bit when the new baby arrived, this will come in handy.

up close of the nursing cover. i especially love the little detail on the strap 🙂

ok.. now off to some serious sewing for my first project for KCWC.  that is, after i dust off the machine…

For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God.  Psalm 86:10

a “bagful” of labour

laborious it was – this!

a rectangular backpack. i was adamant about making it without any referral to any tutorials/blogs etc. whatsoever. and i was very sure i wanted it to be rectangle! stubborn, that is 😛

the result of being ermm.. so “determined” meant that there were many hours of unnecessary work.  pattern mistake, stitching on the wrong side once, seam ripping (that is quite common for me when i work on new project for the first time, anyway)… in fact, i got a little annoyed once i just let the half-finished bag aside for a few days!

anyway, all’s well that ends well, i guess.  i have finished my rectangle backpack, yippie!

as with all backpacks, the straps are adjustable, and i'm glad i cut the webbing longer to allow more flexibility

the inside of the flap has a zipped compartment. inside the main compartment, there is another pocket and i have also added a swivel hook for holding keys etc.

i love this fabric very much, and this was the last bit, after having made a messenger bag earlier.  and i’ve decided to list this one for sale too!

meanwhile, my little model volunteered to carry it and let me photographed him… even though the bag was too big for a toddler like him.. hmmm…

lil j happily showing off the bag, albeit struggling to keep the straps in place. he asked if this bag was for him, and i said "no, mama has to try to sell it so that we have some money to buy you milk." he immediately took off the bag, gave it back to me and asked, "can i have some milk now?" hmmm....

Love must be sincere.  Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Romans 12:9

being formal…

after one whole week of labour, i finally manage to finish lil j’s trousers.  actually, i spent most of the time de-constructing this…

this was a pair of my pants which i haven't worn for a while, ermm.. since i quit my job some years ago actually...

and then i drafted the pattern from this

traced the patterns from an existing pair of shorts that best fit

by the end of the week…

all done... that is after some hours of cutting, sewing, pressing etc...

upon washing and ironing...

and then there was a wedding to go to…

the little boy all dressed up. i made the pants a little too roomy for his liking, and unfortunately i did not get a chance to let him try before hand, so there was no time to work on it further. the shirt was hand-me-down from a friend whose boy's have outgrown it.. which was perfect for lil j.

it was a lovely wedding indeed.  lil j kissed the beautiful bride a couple of times too 🙂

if only we remembered and managed to take at least one family picture yesterday… oh well, there is always next time 😉
